Yes, it is a functional piece as briar is considered the best wood for pipe smoking. I make pipes as a leisure activity so I can tell you for sure that the pipe you are looking at took some one a excellent deal of time and care to make. Don’t know if your friend is a pipe smoker or not, but he needs to be aware that pipes have a “brake-in” period. Nothing complicated about it so don’t worry. You can look online as to how it is done.
